We are delighted that the Chair of Cardiff and Vale UHB, Maria Battle, has been appointed as one of four new trustees of Amgueddfa Cymru.

Under the Museum’s 2006 Royal Charter, Amgueddfa Cymru has sixteen trustees – nine, including the President and Vice President, are appointed by Welsh Ministers and the remainder, including the treasurer, are appointed by the National Museum

The new appointees join as Amgueddfa Cymru celebrates the highest number of visits ever, to its seven national museums. In 2018/19, it welcomed 1.89m visits, an increase of 6.5% compared with last year. The number of people visiting St Fagans National Museum of History following the major redevelopment of the site contributed significantly to the overall total.

Maria Battle, who is also chair of the UHB’s arts and environment group was thrilled with the appointment, saying, “I’m honoured to play a part in preserving and promoting Wales’ great history, art and culture. Cardiff and Vale UHB has a flourishing arts programme, including our own gallery and heritage projects, and I view this appointment as an opportunity bringing to Amgueddfa Cymru what I have learnt here about how the arts make such as positive impact to our wellbeing, especially in difficult times, and how we must work together to ensure easier access for all.”

The success of the arts programme at Cardiff and Vale UHB has largely been due to partnership working with community and arts organisations as well as public bodies such as Amgueddfa Cymru in order to fulfil the shared goals of the Wellbeing of Future Generations Act. The UHB’s arts team is looking forward to working closely with the national museum and excited about potential future projects.
