After a project spanning well over 2 years of work which has been hindered by the pandemic, we are delighted that the Barry Hospital Heritage Project has now been installed in the Mary Lennox Community Room at Barry Hospital.

Initially planned to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Barry Hospital in 2020, this Health Charity funded project charts the history of healthcare in Barry and the Vale of Glamorgan during the past 100 years, and celebrates the past 25 years of Barry Hospital at its current Colcot Road location.

Actual artefacts collected over the years are included as part of the display, and photographs from People’s Collection Wales and staff of Barry Hospital have been included resulting in an informative and almost interactive wall of history.

Local Historian Branwen Roberts has pulled together this wonderful project. She said “Over the last 100 years, the staff and volunteers at Barry Hospital have stored a variety of medical equipment and uniform in the hope that they will be of interest to patients and staff in future. Ranging from nurse’s caps to surgical instruments, they offer a glimpse into healthcare provision in years gone by. There is also a wonderful collection of photographs which document life and community spirit at the old Wyndham Street ‘Barry Acc’ hospital site. The aim of the project is to display these interesting objects and to bring the history of Barry Hospital to life.”

“My background is in textile conservation. I was based at Hampton Court Palace for 13 years. I have worked on many royal artefacts from tapestries to state beds, but this project gave me the interesting opportunity to work with objects that are valuable in a different way and important to the community. I hope people enjoy learning about the history of Barry Hospital as much as I did. Medical practices, instruments and uniforms may have evolved but it’s clear that the dedication of staff to care for their patients at the hospital has remained unchanged.”

Sue Dickson-Davies, Health Charity lead for this project said, “It’s been so interesting working through this project with Branwen, and seeing the input from some of the staff members at Barry Hospital – all of whom were delighted to share their stories and some of their own history at Barry Hospital. This project has been a real team effort and we are delighted that we are finally able to display the results for all to see.”

We were also able to once again work with Grosvenor Interiors to produce the artwork for the walls, and one of the team, Victoria Boulton, said “it was really interesting learning about the origins of the hospital and of course seeing the changes through the photos, that was really fascinating – it was a great collaboration and I really enjoyed working on it.”

If you are visiting Barry Hospital for any reason, it really is worth taking a look!

Wal Bywyd’ Treftadaeth yn Ysbyty’r Barri!

Ar ôl prosiect sy’n ymestyn dros 2 flynedd o waith sydd wedi’i lesteirio gan y pandemig, rydym wrth ein bodd bod Prosiect Treftadaeth Ysbyty’r Barri bellach wedi’i osod yn Ystafell Gymunedol Mary Lennox yn Ysbyty’r Barri.

Wedi’i gynllunio’n wreiddiol i ddathlu 25 mlynedd ers sefydlu Ysbyty’r Barri yn 2020, mae’r prosiect hwn a ariennir gan yr Elusen Iechyd yn olrhain hanes gofal iechyd yn y Barri a Bro Morgannwg yn ystod y 100 mlynedd diwethaf, ac yn dathlu 25 mlynedd diwethaf Ysbyty’r Barri yn ei leoliad presennol ar Heol Colcot.

Mae arteffactau gwirioneddol a gasglwyd dros y blynyddoedd yn cael eu cynnwys fel rhan o’r arddangosfa, ac mae ffotograffau o Gasgliad y Werin Cymru a staff Ysbyty’r Barri wedi’u cynnwys, sydd wedi arwain at greu wal hanes llawn gwybodaeth a bron yn rhyngweithiol.

Mae’r Hanesydd Lleol Branwen Roberts wedi llunio’r prosiect gwych hwn. Dywedodd “Dros y 100 mlynedd diwethaf, mae staff a gwirfoddolwyr yn Ysbyty’r Barri wedi storio amrywiaeth o offer a gwisg feddygol yn y gobaith y byddant o ddiddordeb i gleifion a staff yn y dyfodol. Yn amrywio o gapiau nyrsys i offer llawfeddygol, maent yn rhoi cipolwg ar ddarpariaeth gofal iechyd yn y blynyddoedd a fu. Mae yna hefyd gasgliad gwych o ffotograffau sy’n dogfennu bywyd ac ysbryd cymunedol ar hen safle ysbyty ‘Barry Acc’ Stryd Wyndham. Nod y prosiect yw arddangos y gwrthrychau diddorol hyn a dod â hanes Ysbyty’r Barri yn fyw.”

“Mae fy nghefndir mewn cadwraeth tecstilau. Roeddwn yn gweithio ym Mhalas Hampton Court am 13 mlynedd. Rwyf wedi gweithio ar lawer o arteffactau brenhinol o dapestrïau i welyau gwladol, ond rhoddodd y prosiect hwn y cyfle diddorol i mi weithio gyda gwrthrychau sy’n werthfawr mewn ffordd wahanol ac yn bwysig i’r gymuned. Rwy’n gobeithio y bydd pobl yn mwynhau dysgu am hanes Ysbyty’r Barri cymaint ag y gwnes i. Mae’n bosibl bod arferion meddygol, offer a gwisgoedd wedi datblygu ond mae’n amlwg nad yw ymroddiad y staff i ofalu am eu cleifion yn yr ysbyty wedi newid.”

Dywedodd Sue Dickson-Davies, arweinydd yr Elusen Iechyd ar gyfer y prosiect hwn, “Mae hi wedi bod mor ddiddorol gweithio ar y prosiect hwn gyda Branwen, a gweld y mewnbwn gan rai o aelodau staff Ysbyty’r Barri – yr oeddent i gyd wrth eu bodd yn rhannu eu straeon a’u hanes eu hunain yn Ysbyty’r Barri. Mae’r prosiect hwn wedi bod yn ymdrech tîm go iawn ac rydym wrth ein bodd ein bod yn gallu arddangos y canlyniadau o’r diwedd i bawb eu gweld.”

Roeddem hefyd yn gallu gweithio unwaith eto gyda Grosvenor Interiors i gynhyrchu’r gwaith celf ar gyfer y waliau, a dywedodd un o’r tîm, Victoria Boulton, “Roedd yn ddiddorol iawn dysgu am darddiad yr ysbyty ac wrth gwrs gweld y newidiadau trwy’r lluniau , roedd hynny’n hynod ddiddorol – roedd yn gydweithrediad gwych ac fe wnes i fwynhau gweithio arno’n fawr.”

Os ydych chi’n ymweld ag Ysbyty’r Barri am unrhyw reswm, mae’n werth cymryd golwg!
