We are delighted to present the new Plaza exhibition by Magda Lackowska and Shauna Chapman. Both of their work explores colour and form, with a strong focus on the process of painting and its curative effects. Both artists share the same studio space, and are two of five original founders of Klatch Collective. Through working together, they draw inspiration from their interactions, and have a collaborative approach to creating artwork.
Magda Lackowska:
Just like a great recipe, colour mixing relies on knowing the right elements in order to achieve the desired response, be that to the eyes or the taste buds. A great chef understands how flavours pair with each other, and this same concept is reciprocated in the paintings through the exploration of colour relationships. Ingredients from different ends of the spectrum are combined in order to balance and please the palate, and once the desired richness and depth is reached, you’ll know you have found the correct recipe.
Using familiar objects and food items as the subjects of the paintings evokes a nostalgia of humble everyday moments, and the familiarity of comfortable spaces. The portrayal of modest, domestic scenes paired with gratifying colour relationships makes for a feast for the eyes.

Shauna Chapman:
My work explores the practice of painting in the digital age, challenging how abstract painting can be pursed when this narrative – as a consequence of technology – can be faked or non-assignable. Compositions are informed by digitally manipulated imagery and methods that ask the viewer to engage with and question the marks made on the surface.
There is a particular focus on the contemporary artists’ relationship to the digital world whereby style, methods and ideas from any era are now free for sampling and re-enactment. The painted surface has become a realm in which paintings traditions and approaches are reinterpreted and paintings metaphysical questions on subjects as originality, subjectivity and spiritual transcendence are being tested.

Colour Discourse – arddangosfa gan Magda Lackowska a Shauna Chapman

Mae’n bleser gennym gyflwyno arddangosfa newydd y Plaza gan Magda Lackowska a Shauna Chapman. Mae eu gwaith yn archwilio lliw a ffurf, gyda ffocws cryf ar y broses o baentio a’i effeithiau gwellhaol. Mae’r ddau artist yn rhannu’r un gofod stiwdio, ac maent yn ddau o bum sylfaenydd gwreiddiol Klatch Collective. Trwy weithio gyda’i gilydd, maent yn cael eu hysbrydoli gan y rhyngweithio, ac mae ganddynt ymagwedd gydweithredol at greu gwaith celf.
Magda Lackowska:
Yn union fel rysĂ¡it wych, mae cymysgu lliwiau yn dibynnu ar wybod yr elfennau cywir er mwyn cyflawni’r ymateb a ddymunir, boed hynny i’r llygaid neu i’r blasbwyntiau. Mae cogydd gwych yn deall sut mae blasau’n paru Ă¢â€™i gilydd, ac mae’r cysyniad hwn yn dilyn yr un patrwm yn y paentiadau trwy archwilio cydberthnasau lliw. Cyfunir cynhwysion o wahanol bennau’r sbectrwm er mwyn cydbwyso a phlesio’r daflod, ac unwaith y cyrhaeddir y cyfoeth a’r dyfnder a ddymunir, byddwch yn gwybod eich bod wedi dod o hyd i’r rysĂ¡it cywir.
Mae defnyddio gwrthrychau cyfarwydd ac eitemau bwyd fel testun y paentiadau yn ysgogi hiraeth am eiliadau diymhongar bywyd bob dydd, a chynefindra mannau cyfforddus. Mae’r portread o olygfeydd cymedrol, domestig wedi’u paru Ă¢ chydberthnasau lliw braf yn wledd i’r llygaid.
Shauna Chapman:
Mae fy ngwaith yn archwilio’r arfer o beintio yn yr oes ddigidol, gan herio sut y gellir canlyn paentiad haniaethol pan fydd y naratif hwn – o ganlyniad i dechnoleg – yn gallu cael ei ffugio neu heb ei briodoli. Caiff cyfansoddiadau eu llywio gan ddelweddau a dulliau sydd wedi’u trin yn ddigidol, sy’n gofyn i’r gwyliwr ymwneud Ă¢â€™r marciau a wneir ar yr arwyneb a’u cwestiynu.
Mae ffocws penodol ar berthynas yr artistiaid cyfoes Ă¢’r byd digidol lle mae arddull, dulliau a syniadau o unrhyw gyfnod bellach yn rhydd ar gyfer samplu ac ail-gyflwyno. Mae’r arwyneb wedi’i baentio wedi dod yn amgylchfyd lle mae traddodiadau a dulliau paentio yn cael eu hailddehongli, ac mae cwestiynau metaffisegol paentiadau ynghylch pynciau fel gwreiddioldeb, goddrychedd a throsgynoldeb ysbrydol yn cael eu profi.
