In the Seam
The Hearth Gallery at University Hospital Llandough is delighted to present a large showcase of work by local Welsh Artist and PhD student, Cerys Knighton.
This exhibition by Cerys explores bipolarity in different spaces – threading between the medical, the domestic, and the natural. The artworks roam and catch in the seams between emotional states, perceptions of reality, sensory hypersensitivity, restoration, and decay, suturing internal structures of the body with external bodies of the natural landscape.
The exhibition includes both drawing and sculptural work. Cerys mostly works with pointillism, layering thousands of individual ink dots to create artworks. In an expanding series exploring perceptions in different frameworks, Cerys winds and unwinds ink, while other pieces contrast ink with softer textures of pencil. Her sculptural work binds clay, driftwood, and flora that she shaped and dried into specific expressions. Cerys started working with sculpture during lockdown as a means of sensory grounding to reflect on the boundary between inside/outside, both in place and in perception of the body.
The largest exhibition of work drawn from her PhD to date, this collection analyses nineteenth-century representations of symptoms, diagnostic classifications, changes in treatment, experiences between spaces, as well as present self-reflection from Cerys in dialogue with the histories in her research. Artworks play with poles, boundary lines, doubles, and cycles, to reflect on the complexity of movement between severe states of mood.
This exhibition will be on display in the Hearth Gallery at University Hospital Llandough from 15th June 2021 until 25th July 2021.

About the Artist, Cerys Knighton
Cerys Knighton is a 27-year-old Welsh artist supported by Disability Arts Cymru, and a PhD student at Cardiff University and the University of Bristol, funded by SWW DTP. Her artwork draws from both her research and her experiences of living with bipolar disorder since childhood. Cerys’s PhD thesis analyses archival medical case notes and literary texts to examine the history and representations of manic-depressive illness. Her work hopes to create a space for reflection: looking at how representations develop to reflect on present perceptions, and misconceptions, of bipolar illness.

Mae Oriel yr Aelwyd yn Ysbyty Athrofaol Llandochau yn falch iawn o gyflwyno arddangosfa fawr o waith gan yr artist lleol o Gymru a’r myfyriwr PhD, Cerys Knighton.
Mae’r arddangosfa hon gan Cerys yn archwilio deubegynedd mewn gwagleoedd gwahanol – gan dreiddio rhwng y meddygol, y domestig a’r naturiol. Mae’r gwaith celf yn archwilio ac yn rhyngblethu rhwng cyflyrau emosiynol, canfyddiadau o realiti, gorsensitifrwydd synhwyraidd, adferiad a dirywiad, gan bwytho strwythurau mewnol y corff gyda chyrff allanol tirwedd naturiol.
Mae’r arddangosfa yn cynnwys gwaith darlunio a cherflunio. Mae Cerys yn gweithio â phwyntiliaeth yn bennaf, gan ddefnyddio haenau o filoedd o smotiau inc unigol i greu gwaith celf. Mewn cyfres sy’n ehangu sy’n archwilio canfyddiadau mewn fframweithiau gwahanol, mae Cerys yn weindio ac yn dadweindio inc, tra bod darnau eraill yn cyferbynnu inc â gweadau mwy meddal o bensil. Mae ei gwaith cerflunio yn cyfuno clai, broc môr a blodau y mae hi’n eu siapio a’u sychu’n fynegiannau penodol. Dechreuodd Cerys weithio ar gerflunio yn ystod y cyfyngiadau symud fel ffordd o seilio synhwyrau er mwyn myfyrio ar y ffin rhwng y tu mewn a’r tu allan, o ran lle a chanfyddiad o’r corff.
Mae’r casgliad hwn, yr arddangosfa fwyaf o waith sy’n seiliedig ar ei PhD hyd yma, yn dadansoddi cynrychioliadau’r bedwaredd ganrif am bymtheg o symptomau, dosbarthiadau diagnostig, newidiadau mewn triniaeth, profiadau rhwng gwagleoedd, yn ogystal â chyflwyno hunanfyfyrio gan Cerys ar ffurf deialog gyda’r hanesion yn ei hymchwil. Mae’r gwaith celf yn chwarae â pholion, llinellau ffin, dyblu, a chylchu, i adlewyrchu cymhlethdod y symudiad rhwng cyflyrau difrifol o hwyliau.
