56 Group Wales

We are delighted to present for the first time in the Hearth Gallery, an exhibition of works by 56 Group Wales.

Established in 1956 to promote new cutting edge and contemporary art both nationally and internationally, this long running group of innovative, exciting and established artists has consistently been Wales’ foremost  artists’ collective.

University Hospital Llandough’s connection with the 56 Group can be traced back to 1959, when one of the group’s founder members, Michael Edmonds, was awarded the commission by the MRC Unit for Pnemoconniosis Research at Llandough, sponsored by National Union of Mineworkers, to create the inspired Miners’ Mural, situated now at the front of the hospital.

Michael Edmonds, an architect and artist, had worked as a BevIn Boy, and was well placed to express via his unique and modern visual language, scenes of mining and medicine that express commitment to science and hope for the future.

The 56 Group Wales very much has its sights set on the future. It is an interactive artists’ group, where the sharing of knowledge and skills is furthered by annual and biannual fellowships that the group offers to new graduates in a reciprocal exchange of practices and ideas that keep the group ever moving forward.

We are pleased to present this exceptional exhibition of new works across a variety of different media, and hope that our many visitors to the Hearth Gallery are able to take the time to enjoy these works.

Mae’n bleser gennym gyflwyno, am y tro cyntaf yn Oriel yr Aelwyd, arddangosfa o weithiau gan Grŵp 56 Cymru.

Mae’r grŵp hirsefydledig hwn o artistiaid dyfeisgar, cyffrous a chydnabyddedig, a sefydlwyd ym 1956 i hyrwyddo celf arloesol a chyfoes yn genedlaethol a rhyngwladol, yn gyson wedi bod yn gydweithfa artistiaid blaenaf Cymru.

Gellir olrhain cysylltiad Ysbyty Athrofaol Llandochau â Grŵp 56 yn ôl i 1959, pan ddyfarnwyd comisiwn i un o aelodau gwreiddiol y grŵp, Michael Edmonds, gan yr Uned MRC ar gyfer Ymchwil Niwmoconiosis yn Llandochau, gyda nawdd gan Undeb Cenedlaethol y Glowyr, i greu’r Murlun y Glowyr ysbrydoledig sydd i’w weld nawr o flaen yr Ysbyty.

Bu Michael Edmonds, pensaer ac artist, yn gweithio fel un o Fechgyn Bevin ac roedd mewn sefyllfa dda i fynegi drwy ei iaith weledol fodern ac unigryw olygfeydd o gloddio glo a meddygaeth sy’n dangos ymrwymiad i wyddoniaeth a gobaith i’r dyfodol.

Mae Grŵp 56 Cymru yn sicr â’i fryd ar y dyfodol. Mae’n grŵp artistiaid rhyngweithiol, lle mae rhannu gwybodaeth a sgiliau yn cael ei hybu gan gymrodoriaethau blynyddol a dwyflynyddol y mae’r grŵp yn eu cynnig i raddedigion newydd yn gyfnewid am ymarfer a syniadau o’r ddeutu sy’n galluogi’r grŵp i ddatblygu’n barhaus.

Mae’n bleser gennym gyflwyno’r arddangosfa eithriadol hon o weithiau newydd ar draws amrywiaeth o wahanol gyfryngau, gan obeithio y bydd ein hymwelwyr niferus ag Oriel yr Aelwyd yn gallu treulio amser yn mwynhau’r gweithiau hyn.
